If you have an addiction, then when you decide to quit and you go through the actual process of quitting, it’s not likely that pride is going to be what you feel. It’s possible. But it’s more likely that you will feel grief.

Bad habits, even if they’re damaging, are generally coping mechanisms. They’re crutches and things that ease our pain.

And to lose that thing that makes things okay for a bit isn’t pleasant. And you’ll probably be sad and you’ll have to grieve the loss of the thing that helped a little, even if it harmed you.

Quitting something you liked that’s bad for you isn’t a process full of glory, it requires that you learn how to deal with loss. It’s messy, and it can help you build a better life for yourself.

It’s painful. It’s sad. It’s tragic and awful and you can do it.
