Yes, desire is the root of all suffering. And yes, wanting something is a contract with yourself to be unhappy until you get what you want.
But desire also keeps you alive.
You can’t go on without having something to move toward. Because humans aren’t designed to sit around and do nothing.
So it’s a catch-22. You have to have a desire to keep going. But wanting stuff makes you sad.
The trick is to realize that it’s okay to not have stuff you want. It’s okay to have a burning desire to chase after something and not be there yet.
You have to be willing to let yourself have a strong desire while knowing that it’s okay that you’re not there. You’re on your way. This is the concept of learning to enjoy the journey.
Not having desires is not the answer.
Embracing the journey is how you let go of the pain that comes from not having what you want and keep the drive comes from chasing after what you desire.
