It’s easy to think you’re not making progress.
This is because we learn by copying others.
We compare ourselves to others because we have to.
But this creates a situation where you’re wrong until you’re exactly like the person you’re comparing yourself to. And then you’re right. But this destroys your identity and sense of self.
The solution is to maintain two frameworks of comparison at the same time.
Compare yourself to others so that you have information on where to go.
Compare yourself to who you were so that you know how far you’ve come.
Once you have a reference point in front and behind you, then you’ll have a chance to understand who you are, form your own identity, and come up with more independent decisions on where you should go next.
