Creativity requires silence. It requires that you stop your activity long enough to get bored.
We live in a world of distraction. And we have minds that fear the silence so much that we don’t let ourselves notice when we’re avoiding the quiet moments that spark ideas.
Anxiety is future problem solving and boredom is just nothing. And we all want to have something to do.
So we don’t let ourselves get bored. And you can create art out of anxiety for a little while. But eventually it drains you of energy until you’re a twitching, damaged imitation of the person you could be.
You have to apply your discipline to your limits, not to pushing yourself to further excess of effort.
So stop.
Take a moment to be silent. It won’t be comfortable. You won’t like it. But it will make it possible for you to make great things.
