If you’re addicted to something you’re addicted because you think you need it.
We like to talk about our addictions as if they’re a terrible act of weakness that you indulge in.
That you know what’s good for you but you just can’t help being bad.
But that’s not what’s happening. The opioid epidemic is happening because people are in pain and don’t know how to get out. You’re addicted to caffeine because you’re stressed and overworked and coffee helps you stress and overwork harder. And your addiction to unhealthy relationships meets a need you’re afraid won’t get met in a healthy one.
If you can’t stop doing something, then stop looking at how bad the addiction is and start looking at what it’s doing for you. Then go give yourself a better version of that.
